The Northeast Louisiana Genealogical & Historical Society Regular Meeting 12 January 2014

The Northeast Louisiana Genealgocial & Historical Society met at the Lois Locke Room of the Ouachita  Parish Library on Stubbs Avenue in Monroe on Sunday, 12th January 2014. President Sandra
Blade called the meeting to order and welcomed visitors and members.
Sandra reported that the new flyers about our society had been updated and printed. Gloria Humphreys reported that the our quarterly, Forgotten Louisiana, would come out in March. Back issues of  the quarterly are also for sale for $5.00 each.

Those members with ideas about programs for the 2014 Year need to contact Margaret Rivoire. One idea concerns Mother’s Day: Perhaps submitting “little snippets “ about members’ mothers might
be a good idea for a May program. Another program might revolve around this year being the 100th Anniversary of World War I.

Lourine Baff and Sandra Blate both attended the Mississippi Genealogical Society’s State Meeting with subjects ranging from chancery records, to changes in censuses and women’s identity (since women
may not be listed in wills) were discussed.  An article covering this meeting will be written for Forgotten Louisiana. Mississippi State Genealogical Meetings are held each year in January.

Larry Foreman, who is in charge of Special Collections, was introduced gave a talk with many interesting pictures on how the city of Monroe evolved, starting with South Grand and the “cow paths” that ran off that street. In the library’s Special Collections there are greater than 4000 photos that have been indexed, along with eight different pictorials.
